In this chapter we worked with mapping tiger preservation land, which I liked for this is the kind of stuff I wanted to learn in this class. We began by playing with three different maps and moving them so we could work on each separately. We then added a title and rotated it to move it sideways. We then added legends, tables and a picture of a tiger and re-aligned everything. Overall I think this was the most enjoyable chapter.

We opened an existing template of Asia and resized it to work for what we are doing and but new coordinate lines on it. In the B section of this chapter we add the typhoon symbols on to the map we created. For some reason I couldn’t get the symbols to appear. It said there was a problem with the ID_Number but it gave me no options to change it. The last part of this chapter was connecting the typhoon symbols. We added text and saved it as an EMF file which it can open up in powerpoint or word.

Geocoding address:

Geocoding is the process of creating map features from addresses, place-names or similar info. In the first section we created an address locator. This was difficult for some of the options that were described in the tutorial were not on my computer so I mostly just read teh chapter. In section B you used the address locator to look up specific addresses on the map and it places a marker on that address. With the results you create a geocoded shapefile. In the last section you add the geocoded layer you created earlier and put that on the Atlanta layer.

Editing Features and Attributes:

In the first section we moved parcel boundaries with editing tools and then used a topology tool to move two parcel boundaries at once. In the second part of the chapter we split a property in 2 and then also combined two properties into one. In the last section we calculated the values of all the sections and changed the ID_Number of the one that we changed in the previous exercise.

The beginning of this chapter deals with creating features. In the editing section we drew lines from waterline to hydrants and the length in feet showed how long each line was. In the second part of this chapter it allowed you to add in parcels to maps and allowed you to draw lines which i found to be real useful to say an architect.

Delaware Data Description

1. Address Points- the shape file is called masters and this refers to all the buildings in Delaware County.

2. Annexations- This contains all of Delaware county’s annexations and conforming boundaries from 1853 to present.

3. Archeological- THis map shows all teh sites of archeological importance in delaware.

4. Bench marks- this refers to teh GPS locations in delaware which are described as “This dataset consists of a point coverage of GPS Monuments within Delaware County as well as their descriptions.”

5. Building OUtlines- This dataset consist of boulding outlines for all structures in delaware county, as of April 2006.

6. Census Blocks- this is a polygon shape file of census blocks in delaware county.

7. Census Block Groups- is a polygon shapefile of Census Blocks Groups in Delaware County.

8. Census Tracts- This is the polygon shape file of the largest unit for geography created by the US Census Bureau.

9. Farmlots- dataset consists of all the farm lots in both US military and the Virgina Military Survey districts of Delaware County.

10. Flood Plain 100yr- This contains the 100 yr flood plain within Dleaware County.

11. Flood Plain 500 yr- this contains the 500 yr flood plain within delaware county.

12. Flood Way- Data set contains a polygon coverage of flood way for delware county.

13. Historic Local- This shows all the locally historic points in Delaware County.

14. Historic National- This data set reveals all the Nationally historic sites in Delaware County.

15. Hydro- This contains all the major waterways in Delaware county.

16. Delaware Detail- this shows the Delaware Run creek which flows in front of the art building at OWU.

17. Delaware landmarks- I chose cemeteries, Churches and golf courses and these files display all of the above in Delaware county which are considered landmarks.

18. Municipalities- This data set shows all the municipal boundaries to the municipal buildings in Delaware County.

19. Natural Heritage-

20. Parcels- a polygon coverage of all parcels in delaware county.

21. Precincts- a coverage of all the voting precints boundaries in delaware county.

22. Public Land Survey- consists of polygons depicting the boundaries of 2 public land survey districts within delaware county.

23. Railroad- Displays all te railroad track in delaware counry.

24Road Center Line- displays all the roads in delaware county.

25. Road right of Ways- shows all the road right of ways in delaware county.

26. School Districts- Shows each school district that exists in delaware county.

27. Soils- This data set shows the boundaries for all the different soil type sin delaware county.

28. Subdivision- This shows all the subdivisions and condo boundaries in delaware county

29. Tax District- data set shows all the tax districts in delaware county.

30. Topography- under this file there were many different layers which represented different townships. These files give elevations of townships.

31. Townships- This shows the present townships of delaware county.

32. Townships Historical- This shows the original 18 townships of delaware county.

33. Watersheds- This maps shows all the watershed areas in delaware county.

34. Wetlands- This data set describes all the wetland areas which would be beneficial to construction companies as well as ecological preservationists groups.

35. Woodland- This data set shows all the reserved woodland in delaware which is probably in state forests.

36. Zip Codes- This shows all the areas defined to each zip code in delaware county., which to me looks like there is only one zip code.

37. Zoning- This shows both the historic zones in Delaware but also the different building zones such as commericail or residential.

IN Chap 14 we created our own geodatabase layer and added it to the arccatalog. In section 14b our datasection didn’t corespond with the books so I couldn’t follow it. The last section of chap 14 dealt wth adding fields and domains, but my software woudn’t allow me to do some of it so i jsut read it.

In Chap 13 we worked with both arccatalog and arcmap. We pulled layer of the united states and put it on arcmap. This chapter deals with layers with different coordinate systems and combining them to make them work. We worked on a map of the lower 48 and then added Alaska and Hawaii and converted them to the same map type. In the second half of this chapter we added the fastest growing cities. They were not on the same coordinate plan as the original map so they didn’t appear in the right place. I had to go back and change the coordinate system to match that of the original and then the appeared in the right place.

In Chap 12 we will analyze spatial data usng buffers and overlaps. In section A we created buffers around the nests and rivers to make a map that showed possible logging sections. We then totalled the value of the actual land we could cut and foudn that it was about 2/3 of what the original price was.
